Introduction to Vocabulary

In today’s 10 minute lesson I would like to introduce to our beginner students five important categories of words in the English vocabulary.

When studying English there are many ways to remember vocabulary. To make it easier for you write lists of words that are the same. Today we are going to look a the 5 main categories you can list the words under.

Nouns

Nouns are the words to name all objects or things. For example, girl, house, dog, hospital, book.

60 sec test>Write down as many nouns as you can in 60 seconds.

Verbs

Verbs are action words or something we do. For example, do, talk, run,speak, listen.

60 sec test>Write down as many verbs as you know in 60 seconds.

Adjectives

Adjectives are used to describe nouns. For example, red, happy, good, tall, beautiful.

60 sec test>Try to describe yourself  using as many adjectives as possible in 60 seconds.

Adverbs

Adverbs are words to describe a verb an adjective or another adverb. For example; slowly, very, quickly, really.

60 sec test>Name 5 more adverbs in 60 seconds.

Prepositions

Prepositions are small words used before a noun to suggest a time or place. They indicate the relation between the things mentioned in a sentence. For example in, on, at.

60 sec test>Can you name 10 prepositions in 60 seconds?

Exercise:

Read the following sentences and try to name all the different words.

Jane went to school by bus. She was very busy at school. She had difficult tests in her classes.The day went very slowly for her.

Can you name all the nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and prepositions?

John is a quiet man, he doesn’t like talking much, he doesn’t give his opinion easily.

Ann loves to play chess. She is a very beautiful girl, a thoughtful person who likes enjoying new things.
